About James Whitfield
James Whitfield brings twenty-five years of legal experience to Snake River Law Group in an of-counsel role, concentrating on complex estate planning and business law matters. Semi-retired, James works selectively on cases that benefit from his deep institutional knowledge — multi-generational wealth transfers, business succession planning, and intricate trust structures where experience is the deciding variable.
James spent the bulk of his career at a regional firm in Boise before returning to the Magic Valley, where he was raised. Over that career he has drafted hundreds of wills, trusts, and estate plans; represented businesses ranging from sole proprietorships to closely held corporations; and guided families through the probate process when planning was incomplete or absent. He has seen virtually every mistake that estate plans make and knows precisely how to avoid them.
His business law work focuses on entity formation and governance, buy-sell agreements, business succession planning, and contracts. He works frequently alongside Priya Okonkwo on complex estate matters where business interests are involved — situations where the transfer of a family business, farm, or real estate portfolio requires both estate planning expertise and corporate law fluency.
James approaches every engagement with the patience and perspective that comes from decades of practice. He has no interest in creating unnecessary complexity — his goal is a clean, durable plan that accomplishes exactly what his clients intend and holds up under any scrutiny.
James is a member of the Idaho State Bar and a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), a credential held by fewer than 2,500 attorneys nationwide. He is a past president of the Magic Valley Bar Association.
Representative Experience
James has represented clients in contested hearings, bench trials, jury trials, and appellate proceedings throughout the Fifth Judicial District and beyond. Cases have included complex property division in high-asset divorce, multi-party personal injury litigation, felony criminal defense, and multi-generational estate and business succession planning. James's decades of courtroom and transactional experience allow the firm to take on matters of exceptional complexity.
